How do I VPN into the Northwood network while off-campus?

To VPN into the Northwood network on a Northwood-owned computer:
  1. Make sure you have an Internet connection via WiFi or ethernet cord
  2. Open Start Menu 
  3. Search FortiClient VPN
  4. Double-click FortiClient VPN
  5. Enter your Northwood Username
  6. Enter your Northwood Password
  7. Click Connect

Once connected, you will see a FortiClient icon with a yellow lock (shown below)

To access Outlook archive/PST files, Closeout of Outlook (if open), double click on your S: Drive and then open Outlook

To disconnect, Right-click on the FortiClient icon in the system tray and click Disconnect "Northwood VPN"

To Remote Desktop into your assigned on-campus computer (for programs and share drives):
  1. Make sure that you still have a VPN connection (instructions above)
  2. Open Start Menu 
  3. Search and select Remote Desktop Connection
  4. Type the name of your assigned on-campus computer
  5. Click Connect
  6. Enter your Northwood Username
  7. Enter your Northwood Password
  8. Click Connect

If you have more than one monitor connected to your computer, you can extend the screen across them. Called extended display, this feature allows you to view two or more program windows at the same time, one per monitor. Follow the steps below to turn on extended display.

To use Dual Monitors while using FortiClient:
  1. On the local Windows desktop, right-click on an empty area and select the Display settings option
  2. Scroll down to the Multiple displays section
  3. Below the Multiple displays option, click the drop-down list and select Extend these displays
  4. Select Keep Changes
  5. Open Start Menu 
  6. Search and select Remote Desktop Connection
  7. Click Show Options
  8. Click the Display Tab
  9. Check the Use all my monitors for the remote session

To VPN into the Northwood network on personally-owned computer:

The first time a computer logs into the updated SSL VPN software there will be a few extra steps that need to be completed in order to prepare the computer to use the system. Below are detailed instructions for first-time use.

  1. Make sure you have an Internet connection via WiFi or ethernet cord
  2. Open a web browser (ie Chrome, Edge, Firefox)
  3. Type vpn.northwood.edu into the address bar
  4. Enter your Northwood Email Address
  5. Enter your Northwood Password
  6. Windows machines WILL prompt you to download an app. The installer will be in the middle or bottom of the web browser. ALLOW or ENABLE all prompts as they display!
  7. (You may get a setup control warning asking if you want to download, install, and/or execute software from the following server. You can choose ALWAYS for this prompt.)
  8. Home personal computers may fail a host checker however you will be redirected to a bookmark page that will allow you to connect to the northwood share drive

To access Outlook archive/PST files, Closeout of Outlook (if open), double click on your S: Drive and then open Outlook

To disconnect, closeout of the browser


To Remote Desktop into your assigned on-campus computer (for programs and share drives):
  1. Make sure that you still have a VPN connection (instructions above)
  2. Choose Click here to connect to your on-campus NU computer (FullScreen) 
    • If you run into any errors you can also try using the method below to remote desktop into your on-campus computer
    1. Type the name of your assigned on-campus computer into the white box under terminal session in the browser window (highlighted in green below)
    2. Click Launch and Open
    3. Enter your Northwood Email Address
    4. Enter your Northwood Password
    5. Click OK
