What is Nametag and How Do I Use It to Verify My Identity?

Nametag is a secure identity verification service that uses your mobile device to quickly confirm who you are. By matching your government-issued ID with a selfie, Nametag helps protect your Northwood accounts from impersonation, fraud, and unauthorized access. It also streamlines the verification process for both you and the IT Help Desk, eliminating the need for security questions.

We use Nametag anytime we need to confirm it’s really you—like when resetting passwords, unlocking accounts, updating MFA, or verifying new hires. It keeps your accounts secure and stops impersonation or fraud.

Nametag improves security by protecting accounts from social engineering and impersonation, speeds up access so you can reset your MFA or password without waiting for the IT Help Desk, builds trust by ensuring all identity verification is secure, and safeguards new users by preventing fraudulent onboarding.
To update your password or multi-factor authentication (MFA) methods, you must complete identity verification using the self-service system (Autopilot).

Steps to verify and make password and MFA account changes (1:10 min demo video):
  1. Using a mobile device, Scan the QR code
  2. Scan a government-issued ID, such as a driver’s license or passport (Northwood ID cards cannot be used)
  3. Take a selfie to confirm your identity
  4. Choose Verify and Login to approve sharing your information
  5. Reset your MFA or password
In some cases, you may need to verify your identity to make changes to your Northwood University (NU) profile. Certain university departments will send you a link to verify your identity before any profile updates can be made. (Note: The IT Help Desk cannot make changes to your profile or account on your behalf.)

To verify your identity:
  1. Open the verification link sent by the Northwood University department
  2. Using a mobile device, Scan a government-issued ID, such as a driver’s license or passport (Northwood ID cards cannot be used)
  3. Take a selfie to confirm your identity
  4. Choose Verify to authorize sharing your information
  5. Once your identity is verified, the department can assist you with your requested changes

What ID types does Nametag accept?
Nametag accepts most government-issued IDs, such as driver’s licenses and passports, as long as they include your name, photo, and date of birth.  (Northwood ID cards cannot be used.)

I submitted my ID for review. Now what?
Nametag will verify your ID. If it’s approved, you’ll get a notification, and you can also check the status in the Nametag mobile app.

What if Nametag doesn’t work for me?
If verification fails several times, submit your ID for manual review. Nametag’s staff will verify it securely and privately.

How do I delete my data from Nametag?
You can use the Nametag app to revoke access or delete your information entirely. Keep in mind this may make future verification slower.

Is Nametag secure?
Yes. Nametag is committed to protecting your data and privacy. Your consent is required each time you verify your identity, and you can revoke access or delete your data at any time using the Nametag mobile app. Nametag does not sell your data.
