Suspicious Emails

Information Technology utilizes Proofpoint and InfoSEC, which are enhanced email monitoring software tools, that better protects your Northwood University inbox from spam, malware, and viruses. These tools also places junk emails and advertisements in a “Low Priority Inbox” folder and allow users to report suspicious emails.

PGP

All Northwood owned PCs have Symantec Encription Desktop (PGP) installed to encrypt hard drives and protects secure data from unauthorized access. PGP ensures every sector is encrypted using a symmetric key. This includes all files including operating system files, application files, data files, swap files, free space, and temp files.

On subsequent reboots, PGP prompts users for the correct passphrase or Northwood University password. As long as users have entered the correct password the encrypted disk's files will become available. When a PC is shut down or rebooted, PGP will encrypt the data on the computer and prompt for credentials upon login.

Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)

Microsoft Multi-factor Authentication (MFA) creates an additional layer of security when logging into a Microsoft Office 365 account. This additional security is associated with something in your possession, such as a personal smart phone, that would be unavailable to someone who gained access to a Microsoft Office 365 account.

The first factor in MFA is your account password. The most convenient second factor option is to use the Microsoft Authenticator mobile app on your smart phone to approve the sign-in. Other options are detailed in “How do I add, delete or change my Self-Service Password Reset (SSPR) or Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) security methods?" KB article.

If the wrong code or no code is entered, the Microsoft Office 365 account cannot be accessed.

Self-Service Password Reset (SSPR)

Self-Service Password Reset (SSPR) allows users to reset their own password and unlock their account without contacting the Northwood University IT Help Desk. Every 180 days you will need to verify your registration information. On day 180, when accessing an online Northwood University software or system, you will be prompted to verify that security methods are up-to-date.
